Set in mid‑19th century Central Asia, Days Gone By is a sweeping historical novel that follows the life of Atabek, son of a wealthy merchant named Yusufbek, and his growing love for Kumush, the daughter of a family friend. The story moves between the bustling town of Margilan and the politically tense city of Tashkent, under the rule of the harsh governor Azizbek. Social hierarchy, tribal loyalties, and family pressures weigh heavily on the characters.
Atabek’s devoted companion is his slave Khasanali, who serves also as his mentor. As Atabek and Kumush fall in love, they face obstacles—not only from class and family expectations, but also from jealousy and scheming by others, especially Hamid, who is envious and hostile. Political intrigue intensifies when Azizbek mistreats emissaries from the Khanate of Kokand, spurring military conflict. Atabek is falsely accused, arrested, and even sentenced to death. Family loyalties are tested, and the characters wrestle with duty, honor, betrayal, and tradition. Through lyrical prose, tender longing, and vivid description of life along the Silk Road—its markets, villages, caravan routes—Qadiri explores themes of love, loyalty, filial duty, and the constraints of social norms.
